Picnics Theme

Picnics Theme

Summer is the perfect time for picnics! Here are some great books to share with your little ones all about picnics!

Ask if anyone has gone on a picnic.

Talk about what you do on a picnic:
What you see?
What do you hear?
What types of food do you eat?
What type of weather is best for a picnic?
Where do you go?  A park?

 Action Song: “Ants Go Marching”
The ants go marching one by one, hurrah! Hurrah!
The ants go marching one by one, hurrah! Hurrah!
The ants go marching one by one,
The little one stops to suck his thumb,
And they all go marching down, to the ground, to get out of the rain.
(two, tie his shoe; three, climb a tree; four, shut the door; five, take a dive)

Let's Pack a Picnic Basket

A-tisket, A-tasket,
Let's pack a picnic basket.
We'll fill it up with food to munch.
What's in our picnic lunch?

Ants at the Picnic (tune: "Skip to My Lou")

Ants at the picnic, what'll I do?

Ants at the picnic, what'll I do?
Ants at the picnic, what'll I do?
Guess I will eat real quickly!

Hungry Ant: Have children sit in a circle. In the middle of the circle have a variety of picnic items such as napkins, a thermos, a paper plate, a sandwich, a fork, a banana etc. Have all the children close their eyes. Select one child to be the "Hungry Ant." That child removes one item and hides it behind their back. When children open their eyes have them guess what the "Hungry Ant" took away.

Picnic Tossing: Have children take turns tossing plastic play food into a picnic basket. Keep moving the basket farther away to see how far they can throw the items.

Ants go Marching: Play the song 'The Ants Go Marching' and let children march around room or outdoor area.

Fireworks in the Sky Original Author Unknown (Tune: Row , Row, Row Your Boat)
Boom, crack, whistle, pop!
Fireworks in the sky.
See them lighting up the night,
On the Fourth of July.
Red, blue, gold, and green,
With fireworks we say,
Happy Birthday, America,
It's Independence Day!

On Independence Day
(Tune: Mary Had a Little Lamb)

Fireworks go snap, snap, snap!
Crack, crack, crack!
Zap, zap, zap!
Fireworks make me clap, clap, clap
On Independence Day!

Way up in the Sky (Tune: Row, Row, Row Your Boat)
Wave, wave, wave the flag,
Hold it very high.
Watch the colors gently wave,
Way up in the sky.

March, march, march around,
Hold the flag up high.
Wave, wave, wave the flag,
Way up in the sky.

You are my sunshine song with paper plate sunshines

Sunshines --to make theses use yellow paper plates- cut points out all the way around and make them look like a sun -- draw a face on with black marker and place on a tongue depressor size stick with strong tape.

If they need to get up and move around feel free to use the parachute with balls
lift up parachute,
go under from one side to the other before it comes down,
walk in a circle holding handles,
lay down on floor under the parachute to see if it touches belly
Place paper crayons colors  red , white, and blue or even yellow paper stars on the parachute to shake them up.
